1937 Chris Craft Sportsman - 'Leading Lady'
Owner: Charles Wegner
Home Port: Walworth, WI

Chris Craft built 101 Prewar Sportsman Utility boats of 24ft and 25ft length from 1936-1941. Only 12 were built with twin engines and they were all 24ft long. Twin production by year was: 1936 - 1, 1937 - 5, 1938 - 4, 1939 - 2. Of these 12, one was delivered to London in the summer of 1938 and may have been destroyed during WWII. Leading Lady is boat number 2 of the remaining 11 and was the first one out the factory door on March 7, 1937. At this time, we are only aware of 3 surviving prewar twins. At the time Chris Craft was the only builder that had a national dealer network. Boats were usually delivered to dealers by rail and sold locally, but these large "Utilities" were many times a special order item for the well-to-do families in America. Leading Lady was a special order boat and was delivered by water from Algonac, Michigan to its new owner in Detroit, Michigan. The late Christopher Smith (grandson of the founder Christopher Smith) stated that as a young boy, his job was to water test the boats prior to shipping out by rail and to deliver boats by water to buyers in the local Detroit area. Leading Lady might just have been delivered by the young Chris Smith in the Spring of 1937. Information from the 1937 Chris Craft factory specifications sheet tell us that Leading Lady is a Model 716 Utility Boat sporting two 85hp Chris Craft "K" engines made by Hercules Motors. The Hercules motors were used by Chris Craft from the 1930s to about 1957 when the first V8 was offered. Other specifications: Length 24'0", Beam 92",Weight 4585 lbs, Fuel 60 gal, Speed 34 mph, Price $3090. Additionally the Sportsman model offered a live bait well under the front seat utilizing a water "pickup" and "discharge" tube to aerate the live bait. Without a rear seat, "Utility" class boats with engines under wooden "boxes" were used to deliver mail during the Great Lakes summer months and to haul supplies/groceries to island dwellers. They were the precursor of the SUVs and pickup trucks that are so popular today. Like many restorations, this boat was found in a barn in Peoria, Illinois in November 1998 after a 4 year search and has been in restoration ever since. After almost 40 years of drydock, Leading Lady won "Best in Class" in the prestigious "Keels & Wheels" boat show in Texas in May 2023.

1940 Chris Craft Delux Sportsman - 'Wooden Nickols'
Owner: Tom Nickols
Home Port: Lake Geneva, WI

Wooden Nickols, a 22-foot Deluxe Utility was shipped from Algonac to Hessel, Michigan in June 1940. The owner of the Hessel grocery store purchased the boat to deliver groceries to summer residents on the surrounding islands, naming her Calli Sue after his granddaughter. The boat was acquired by an Ohio family and moved to Indian Lake, Ohio and renamed Smoove. We originally understood this was because of how, Smoove the boat went through the water. It was actually how Jackie Gleason's character in the Homeymooner's described how his cocktails went down, 'Smoove". The boat was moved to Iowa and received a new 5200 bottom and fresh varnish. Renamed Traveler it hit the road visiting a number of boat shows. The boat was relocated to Geneva Lake in 2007 and renamed Wooden Nickols. In frontier day's paper money was moved by stage coach, coins however were too unwieldy to ship. Local merchants banded together and "issued" nickels. dimes and quarters in wood. A merchant's life was short, so every few years the current crop of businesses would issue new coins and stop honoring the old ones. Hence the saying, "don't take any wooden nickels."

1962 Budych Hacker Custom Utility - 'THUMPER'
Owner: William Budych
Home Port: Lake Geneva, WI

Hi! My name is THUMPER. I was conceived in 1960 and born in 1962. My builder, William Budych Sr., was a well-known mechanical engineer and boat builder.

In 1960, William Budych Sr. was employed by Mr. Russell Gage of Gage Marine. At that time, William Budych Sr. was responsible for the production of the 22it. Gage Hackers. His responsibilities included tank testing the models at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, patterning and fabricating all the patterns for the hulls structure; also, overseeing the production process. The first hull built plowed bad so Sr. decided to remove some of the chine, run out the stern. Due to these changes, the builds that came after handled and performed well.

William Sr. decided it was time to build one of his own and the production of me started, in his mother's garage for a personal boat of his own, during his tree time. I think my appearance speaks for Sr's. Excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail. I am grateful that my owners, all Geneva Lakefront families, have taken great care and maintained me above and beyond the usual; for the last b1 years. My creator, William Budych Sr., also is well known for building the Water Safety Patrol Boat #1; with the assistance of Duane (Dude) Assman. It is, to this day, the only existing (in service) wood patrol boat in the U.S. at this time.

William Budych Sr. passed away peacefully in his home on December 5,

2008. He created a huge legacy of being a excellent mechanical engineer, 1 class boat builder along with being a very successful business man. He was also an excellent father and teacher.

I am very proud and pleased that I have come back home to the Budych family. I was purchased by Sr's son, William Budych Jr. in 2012. Jr. continues to operate Sr's marine business that was created over 58 years ago. Jr. has been involved for 4 5 years and had the great opportunity to operate as President and owner of 25 years. I know that I am now in the best care and will enjoy the Budych family for generations to come.

1959 Century Resorter - 'My Fifttynine'
Owner: Jim Hayek
Home Port: Davenport, IA

19' 1959 Century Resorter with the Gray Marine V8 225 AMC Block. 1959 CENTURY 19' RESORTER - in typical Century fashion they were always at the cutting edge of Boat Designs in the 1950's and 60's. Often following the automotive styling of the day they came up with some very interesting and sometimes controversial designs. The 1959 19 foot Resorters were one of those. Introduced in 1958 they broke traditional design with a very unique squared off bow which was often compared to the deck of an aircraft carrier!! That said the sales for the 19' Resorter were 170 boats in 1958 and then up to 180 in 1959 which was significantly more than the previous model it replaced..

1971 Searay SRV220 Cuddy - 'Double Trouble'
Owner: Mike Ardito
Home Port: Walworth , Wi

Ordered and purchased new by Robert Ardito of Lake Forest Illinios. Robert wanted a boat for fishing in the shallow lakes of Canada, which he would travel to for 2 weeks out of every summer. He went to Munson Marine in Fox Lake Illinois and ordered the biggest engine available, which was the Berkley Pack-A-Jet 455 330hp. Oldsmobile with Berkley Jet Drive. He took delivery of the boat in November of 1971 at the cost of $8,165. In 1975, Robert decided he needed more horsepower to get to and from his fishing spots. He then wrote letters to Searay and Berkley to see if they would add a second engine for him. The responses he received from both were basically it probably can't be done and wouldn't recommend it since the stern wasn't designed for that. So Robert went ahead and ordered a complete engine and Jet drive directly from Berkley and being the lifetime mechanic and Hot-rodder that he was, did the conversion himself along with some help from his Nephew Mike, who did the fiberglass and paint work on the stern. After Robert's passing in 2009, his nephew Mike Ardito decided to purchase the boat to keep it in the family. The boat has always been stored in a heated garage its entire life, and has only been in the water overnight maybe a handful of times. Mike decided to change the interior color, so he restored everything except the Cuddy cabin, which is all original, and the gauge panel thet Robert put together. To this day, the boat has never had any issues with having twin engines and 660 horsepower!.
