1941 Chris Craft 105 Deluxe Runabout - 'RUMOUR'
Owner: David De Horn
Home Port: Glenview, IL

1941 Chris Craft 17ft. Deluxe Barrelback Runabout #71769 Owned by David and Claire De Horn RUMOUR was completed in Algonac, Michigan and shipped to Miami, Florida, on January 27, 1941 which coincidentally, was my father’s 1st birthday. The same day, the following RUMOUR was leaked: "The Peruvian minister has informed a member of my staff that he had heard from many sources, including a Japanese source, that, in the event of trouble breaking out between the United States and Japan, the Japanese intended to make a surprise attack against Pearl Harbor...." After hearing this RUMOUR, Joseph Clark Grew, US Ambassador to Japan wired the following warning to FDR and the US State Department on January 27, 1941: Telegram #125, 1/27/41 18:00 Tokyo, Japan to US State Department “My Peruvian colleague told a member of my staff that he had heard from many sources including a Japanese source that the Japanese military forces planned in the event of trouble with the United States, to attempt a surprise mass attack on Pearl Harbor using all their military facilities. Although the project seemed fantastic the fact that he had heard it from many sources prompted him to pass on the information.” We all know what happened less than 11 months later……..

1924 Consolidated ship building corp Speedway - 'Cherokee'
Owner: Patrick Maher
Home Port: Delavan , Wi

Cherokee was built for HJ Heinz in 1924 . She spent most of her life in Old Mystic, Connecticut as a commuter craft for trips to Manhattan.

She was acquired from the late David Young and shipped to Wisconsin . She spent 7 years on the hard surrounded by corn and thankfully had pine trees shading her from the afternoon sun. She has been in the care of Patrick Maher for the last 8 years. Her power plant and hull work was done about 16 years ago with sister ribs and new fasteners by Gerald Ford .  She serves the Geneva Lake for day trips providing many happy customers enjoyment for their special events and reunions . With a little luck, she will spend the rest of her days on Geneva Lake.

1946 Chris Craft Express Cruiser - 'Sentimental Lady'
Owner: Nicholas Loniello
Home Port: Madison, WI

Sentimental Lady was sold to her proud owner fast and cheap by a scoundrel who had to leave town fast before the grand jury handed down the indictment. She has since been twice restored. She is older than her owner but in much better condition. She has two helms, one on the deck for sunny weather and one inside the cabin for those rainy or chilly cruises. She is 100% original except for some whimsical additions.

1953 Shepherd Express Cruiser - 'Falcon'
Owner: Lars Bergersen
Home Port: Williams Bay, WI

This amazing craft was painstakingly restored by Bergersen Boat Co. This hull is #13 in the first series of 27' Shepherds built with a beam of 9' 6". This boat boasts the rare 331Chrysler Hemis first offered in 1953. The engines were just overhauled including the Chrysler V-drive transmissions that have all reconditioned clutch packs and seals. Top speed is 42 mph. This boat comes complete with kerosene stove top, head, original stainless cooler and sink. The bottom is original and the hull sides have been refastened with silicon bronze screws. All bungs were made from original old stock Honduras Mahogany from a 'donor Shepherd'. This craft has the original throttle and shift control levers that have been custom machined to operate modern control cables. You will never find a smoother shift on a Shepherd. The 200+ HP Chrysler Hemi's have modern Delco electronic ignition systems that we machined parts and adapters to accept this incredible upgrade. With this new ignition system the engines run better than they did when brand new. The boat has 15 coats of Epifanes varnish just applied, restored windlass winch for the anchor, a custom built mahogany swim platform which mirrors the intricate Bubinga and teak grating on the floor in the boat. Equipped with a built in Fusion sound system with Bluetooth capabilities housed in the cuddy cabin and mahogany speakers.

1947 Greavette Custom Runabout - 'NO GOLF TODAY'
Owner: Moss Cartwright
Home Port: White Pigeon, MI

No Golf Today was built in Gravenhurst, Ontario in 1947 as a custom runabout. Unfortunately two days after the boat was restored...it sank! I struggled most of the day to get it back on the trailer. Watching this activity from the dock, an Amish woman walked up and said that if the boat was fiberglass, this would not have happened....leaving me to ponder the irony of this statement and the challenge of my day! One year later the boat was totally restored by Ramsey Brothers Restoration of Toledo, Ohio. The boat is used about 40 hours each summer by family and friends..water-skiing, tubing or just enjoying the one of a kind spin around the lake.

1948 Chris-Craft Sportsman - 'Effie'

In 1955, Gordon “Gordy” Whowell started Gordy’s with “Effie” in Fontana, WI by giving speed boat rides on the west shore of Lake Geneva. Families came from all over to experience Gordy’s famous speedboat rides- “A millionaire’s thrill for 1 thin bill.”

In front of you is the family’s original boat. She holds special meaning to the family as a reminder of our history over the past 65 years. We hope you enjoy seeing this boat here as you reflect back and look forward to building more great boating memories with your family on Lake Geneva.

1940 Chris Craft Deluxe Utility - 'Wooden Nickols'
Owner: Tom Nickols
Home Port: Lake Geneva, WI

Wooden Nickols, a 22-foot Deluxe Utility was shipped from Algonac to Hessel, Michigan in June 1940. The owner of the Hessel grocery store purchased the boat to deliver groceries to summer residents on the surrounding islands, naming her Calli Sue after his granddaughter. The boat was acquired by an Ohio family and moved to Indian Lake, Ohio and renamed Smoove. We originally understood this was because of how, Smoove the boat went through the water. It was actually how Jackie Gleason's character in the Homeymooner's described how his cocktails went down, 'Smoove". The boat was moved to Iowa and received a new 5200 bottom and fresh varnish. Renamed Traveler it hit the road visiting a number of boat shows. The boat was relocated to Geneva Lake in 2007 and renamed Wooden Nickols. In frontier day's paper money was moved by stage coach, coins however were too unwieldy to ship. Local merchants banded together and "issued" nickels. dimes and quarters in wood. A merchant's life was short, so every few years the current crop of businesses would issue new coins and stop honoring the old ones. Hence the saying, "don't take any wooden nickels."

1956 Chris Craft Continental - 'Lone Palm'
Owner: Gary Paxson
Home Port: Lake Geneva, WI

This boat was a Lake Geneva boat & was the Cameron's family boat of Geneva Lake Boat Co. I remember seeing her hang @the slip where the Yacht Club pier is now when I was 9. She was restored with the very capable hands @ Delavan Lake Boat Shed, her 2nd home in winter for 25 yrs.She is more than I deserve; the joy of seeing the smiles & shared moments of her guests is the true reward I receive for her "high maintenance" The name is from a Jimmy Buffett song, & a metaphore for me: though it is possible to add another palm tree; & the truth is you are never alone when you share.

1957 Chris Craft Continental - 'Birchwood'
Owner: Karen Birch
Home Port: Barrington, IL

This boat was purchased new in February of 1957 by Karen's late parents, Robert and Maxine Birch, of Griggsville, IL. Her dad became a Chris Craft dealer in 1956 and Karen has his original franchise certificate. This boat is all original and Karen has the boat's original order form, invoice, service manuals, prop, fenders, hand spot light, ladder and water skies that her dad used. Her dad's captain hat sits so proudly on the boat's dash. Karen uses one of the original canvas boat covers that had never been used and was being stored in her dad's attic. This boat spent most of its time on the Illinois River in central Illinois where Karen has great family memories. The last time the boat was in the water was in the summer of 1978 on the Mississippi river. Since then the boat had been sitting on her original cradle and boat trailer in a machine shed on the family farm. In May of 2010 the boat was transported by flatbed to McHenry, IL where it was completely restored by Fox River Valley Boat Company. The summer of 2011 was Birchwood and Karen’s first year of boating. Since then the boat has won various awards through the years at various boat shows. In September 2016 this boat was given the honor of being on the cover plus an article in a national boating magazine called “Classic Boating”. The boat was never named so Karen choose "Birchwood" in memory of her late parents. Karen's late parents are always with her on this boat and this boat is a constant reminder of how wonderful her parents were and the fabulous childhood they gave her. When asked about the boat Karen always says: “I made a promise to my dad that I would take care of his boat. I that’s what I intend to do”

1955 Correct Craft Commuter Deluxe - 'Sunday Drive'
Owner: Todd Weitekamp
Home Port: Fisher, IL

This is a 1955 correct craft commuter deluxe that has just finished a 3 winter restoration.  The top decking needed to be replaced simply due to drying out.  The sides were removed and refastened so the side wood is original to the boat.  It was a great learning process for me and my wife under the watchful eyes of Alan Arrighi.  This boat was restored in the old milking parlor of our dairy barn.  We did repower the boat with a Chrysler Hemi which was the largest factory option from correct craft.  This was done simply so we could ski this boat whenever we wanted...and we do!

2003 Grand-Craft Grand Sport - 'Irish Ayes'
Owner: Ross Lynch
Home Port: Lake Tomahawk , WI

This Grand-Craft combines state of the art woodworking techniques with old school craftsmanship; modern performance technologies with classical, tradional styling. Each Grand-Craft is hand-built requiring thousands of man-hours; a month or longer, just in the finishing room. Grand-Craft employs a special wood epoxy saturation process that bonds multiple layers of wood to achieve unsurpassed flexibily and strength. This saturation process not only protects the wood but also eliminates the need for “soaking up” the hull. The craftsmen mill and color match Philippine mahogany, which is preferred for it’s sound/shock absorption. Each piece has been hand selected on the basis of it’s reddish-brown hue and grain. Fir stringers run the length of the hull for added strength. All hardware is hand-cast in brass or bronze, which is plated in copper, nickel, and chrome. Heavy as it is handsome, this strikingly beautiful hardware exemplifies the quality of a Grand-Craft boat.

I modified it during the restoration so I could use it on Lake Michigan and thus it is not "original", however, with a fully restored 45hp Mercury Mark58 pushing it along, it is a ton of fun and truly one of a kind.

1957 Trojan Sea Breeze - 'Walleen 2.1'
Owner: Kyle Knoke
Home Port: Waupaca, WI

Inherited in 2015 from Uncle Wally and Aunt Eileen (owners since 1960), the Walleen has spent her whole life in the Lake Winnebago ports of Neenah/Menasha. This 19' day cruiser was Amish-built by The Trojan Boat Company in Lancaster, PA. The Sea Breeze 28' of the late 1950s was one of Trojan's most historically notable vessels. New to the classic scene, when I took on the 'task' of refinishing, I had no idea what I was getting into. Why didn't someone tell me?!? Restoration performed on location at Nimphius Boats, Inc. under the most generous supervision of Alex Nimphius. The Walleen is driven by the original twin 1957 Johnson 35HP Sea Horses thanks to life-long service from Doug Bodway of Valley Marine Mart, Inc. All-original mahogany decking and plywood hull...with a few custom crafted accoutrements.

1969 Lund RN-14 Charger
Owner: Chad Jensen
Home Port: Hartford, WI

Moderately restored over the spring and summer 2018. The turquoise color is not original to the boat, but is an original Lund color on other models of the same year. The boat has new flotation foam, new floor, and new paint. The seat frames are original but were recovered at some point in the history of the previous owners. I chose to match the carpet to the color of the seats rather than going back to the original olive drab color. The engine is being brought back to all original from 1968 other than a new fuel pump, thermostat, and starter solenoid. At some point a previous owner painted the entire engine, mount, and trim motor Evinrude gold it to match an engine cover from a Lark 40. I replaced the engine cover with an original Ski-Twin cover found on eBay, but had to use the front door from the Lark since it was missing from the Ski-Twin cover. The Evinrude gold paint has been flaking away and I'm working on removing all of it to bring it back to the original light blue. It has been completely rewired, and the trim motor has been replaced and is fully functional.

1970 Streblow Sport Utility - 'Mr T III'
Owner: Don Taylor
Home Port: Williams Bay, Wi

In February 2001, I purchased a 1970 Streblow custom wood boat. This twenty three foot beauty had a great history that accompanied the boat Namely, a gentleman from northern Illinois, William D. Wallace, was a partner in a silver mine with John ‘Duke’ Wayne Wallace purchased the boat new from the Streblow factory in Kenosha, WI.,and they decided to name the boat “HI LO SILVER”, a very fitting name. They operated the pleasure craft on Lake Delavan in Wisconsin, for almost ten years.  John Wayne passed away in 1979. With the drop in the price of silver in 1980, they decided to sell the boat. Larry Streblow and son Randy purchased the boat and retuned it to their factory in Kenosha. The Streblow family remodeled the boat and kept it for personal use for a couple of years until it was sold to Gregg Liebovich from Rockford, Illinois. He kept the boat for eighteen years on Geneva Lake. After cruising Geneva Lake over the summer, I load the boat and haul it on my annual journey back to Lake Eustis, Florida, where I, along with the help of my friends, refinished the boat and renamed it ‘Mister T III’. John Wayne would be impressed with the revitalization of “HI LO SILVER.”

After the 2015 GLBS, since the Streblow ownership had recently taken place, Taylor chatted with Lars Bergersen about refinishing the hull and removing the teak boards from the king planks Lars agreed to have the boat completed in six weeks. Taylor gave him eight weeks !

Thus, the boat won the BEST STREBLOW at the 2016 Geneva Lake Boat Show .
The following September, the boat received a Silver Award at the ACBS INTERNATIONAL SHOW in Racine, Wisc

The 2018 Sunnyland Boat Show  brought another award !!!

1972 Streblow - 'The Real McCoy'
Owner: Scott Leitner
Home Port: Lake Geneva, Wi

My wife, Patty, and I purchased our Streblow from Streblow Custom Boats last Summer.  Over the Winter months Steve Horton and his team of expert workers at Streblow Custom Boats did a "Refresh" on our 23 foot Streblow.  Our boat was built in 1972, yet after the "Refresh" it is looking better than new.  My wife's maiden name is McCoy, so it was easy to come up with our new name for the boat, "The Real McCoy" and it will continue to remain on beautiful Lake Geneva.

1978 Steblow 23 - 'Fire Escape'
Owner: Ray Fitzgerald
Home Port: Fontana, WI

A new home for a vintage Steblow

Not long ago, my youngest daughter Holly made a comment: ‘I want a Streblow when I’m 50!  She is only 45.  Well, being retired and having a lifetime interest in inboard wooden boats, I thought I would be the logical one to research this project.  I approached Lars Bergersen, owner of Bergersen Boats, and former employee of Streblow Custom Boats, Steve Horton and Bob Clausius of Streblow Custom Boats.  Between those 3 experts and myself, we considered a 19.5’ 1963, a 1968 23’ and a 1978 23’, “Fire Escape”.  “Fire Excape” as my choice.  She’s a straight drive 440 cu.in., 330 horsepower immaculate boat! Her former owner used to wax the engine. How’s that for tender love & care? “Fire Escape” will have a new home, on Lake Geneva with her new owner, Holly & Hans Margaret, Lars, Charlotte & Ginny Lynn.
